Top 5 Autumn activities

Chestnuts roasting on an open campfire, early evening sunsets and long walks crunching your way through red and gold leaves are just a few of the simple pleasures Autumn in England has to offer.  Britain’s forests, parks and gardens come alive with a dazzling display of colour and our skies are filled with the autumn migration.

Autumn truly is a great season to get back to nature and to go camping with a Motorhome.  Here at Capricorn Campers we have put together a “top 5” list of things to do throughout Autumn to help inspire you when planning your Autumn road trip.  We have also provided our recommendations for nearby campsites but there are plenty of campsites open all year to choose from.

#1 Awaken your senses

Head to the woods and feel good this autumn amongst the sights, sounds and smells of the forest.

Autumn is the time of year for our trees to take centre stage, as nature provides us with one last visual delight before the chilly nights of winter set in.  One of the best places to make the most of this autumnal show has to be the New Forest due to its unique mix of ancient, ornamental and native trees.  The Forest comes alive with rich reds and golden hues making it the perfect time to go and explore what this beautiful season has to offer.

2017 saw one of the most dazzling displays of Autumn colours in 80 years “to rival even the Canadian fall” and expectations are high again this year.

Where to stay: Capricorn campers recommends Green Hill Farm Caravan & Camping Park. (Open all year) Tel:01794 324117

An excellent location to discover the peace and beauty of the New Forest National Park, or as a base from which to enjoy the many activities available in the area.

#2 Halloween camping events

Camping at Halloween is always a winner with the children and whether you fancy a ghost tour around a haunted castle, trying your hand at pumpkin carving or a conker fight there is always a lot happening on and around the Camping and Caravanning club sites. Whether you’d like a spooky experience to entertain the kids during half term, or are simply looking for a mid-season break, planning a camping trip at this time of year can be treat-tastic!

Don’t forget that by hiring a Campervan or Motorhome from Capricorn Campers you will become temporary members of the club benefiting from reduced pitch fees.

Visit the Camping & Caravanning Club website for full details on what’s happening this Halloween.

#3 Gaze in awe at reds’ rut

The red deer rut usually starts in late September and last until the end of October.  Loud, frenetic and deeply primal, the red deer rut is one of Scotland’s most impressive wildlife spectacles.   Early morning is a good time of day to catch this spectacle, as the low, golden light and cold dewy air creates the perfect autumnal atmosphere, particularly for photographers.

Where to stay: Lochranza Campsite, Isle of Arran 01770 830273

From early September the Lochranza Golf Course turns into the place to be as the red deer herds congreate for the rut and their roars resonate from late afternoon through to morning. The rut peaks during the first two weeks of October.

#4 Bonfire and fireworks

Chatsworth Bonfire Night Derbyshire, November 4th -5th 2017

Once again Aerial acrobats, a steel band and fire acts will take over the grand South lawn at the magnificent Derbyshire estate with dazzling firework demonstrations taking place throughout the evening. Immerse yourself in history as you wander round Chatsworth House and be sure to take a scenic stroll arpound the 1000 acre park laid out by Capability Brown.

Where to stay:   Chatsworth Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Site 01246 582226

#5 Forage for Autumn treasures

There’s loads of foraging and mushroom courses being held all over the country so why not check out what’s available in the area you’re planning on travelling to for a day of foraging fun.  If you’re travelling from further afield to pick up your camper from Capricorn Campers to explore what Norfolk has to offer this autumn then we wold recommend the Canoe Man based in Wroxham.

Camping doesn’t just have to be limited to the summer - mind you if you’re talking canvas tents I might be in agreement!!-  That’s the joy of hiring a motorhome from Capricorn Campers, you get all the fun of camping but in a central heated hotel room on wheels!! All of our Vehicles have heating and hot water and trust me if we were able to stay toasty warm when we took one of our Motorhomes skiing this year you won’t have a problem keeping warm in the English Autumn… Just remember to take a cagoule.

Autumn happens only once a year, and if you're not paying attention, you just might miss it so get out there and enjoy

Wishing you all a Happy Halloween
