How to Keep Your Motorhome Cool During a Summer Heatwave

How to Keep Your Motorhome Cool in the Heat | 10 Essential Summer Motorhome Tips

Planning a summer motorhome holiday? While warm weather is perfect for exploring the UK and Europe, high temperatures can quickly make your motorhome feel uncomfortable. Fortunately, there are plenty of simple ways to keep your motorhome cool and enjoy a more comfortable journey.

At Capricorn Campers, we've helped thousands of customers enjoy memorable motorhome holidays across the UK and Europe. Here are our top tips for staying cool during hot weather.

1. Park Your Motorhome in the Shade

One of the easiest ways to reduce the temperature inside your motorhome is to avoid direct sunlight whenever possible. When choosing a campsite pitch, look for natural shade from trees or nearby buildings.

Even partial shade can make a significant difference to the temperature inside your motorhome. If shade isn't available, try positioning the vehicle so the largest windows avoid the afternoon sun.

2. Keep Blinds and Curtains Closed During the Day

Keeping blinds and curtains closed during the hottest part of the day is one of the most effective ways to keep your motorhome cool.

Large windows provide fantastic views but can also allow a significant amount of heat inside. Closing blinds on the sunny side of the vehicle helps reflect sunlight and reduce heat build-up.

All of the window blinds in our Galaxy Range family motorhomes are manufactured using heat-reflective materials, helping to keep the interior cooler during summer adventures.

3. Use Your Cab Air Conditioning Before Arriving

If you're travelling during hot weather, use the vehicle's air conditioning to your advantage.

Before reaching your campsite, turn the cab air conditioning on and allow cooler air to circulate through the motorhome. This can significantly reduce the temperature before you park up for the evening.

Once you've arrived, keep doors and windows closed initially to retain the cooler air before setting up your ventilation.

4. Create a Cross Breeze

Airflow is crucial for keeping any motorhome comfortable.

Open windows on opposite sides of the vehicle and open roof vents or skylights where possible. Hot air naturally rises, so roof vents are particularly effective for allowing trapped heat to escape.

All of our Star Range campervans and the 2-berth Planet panel van feature large side and rear doors that can be fully opened, creating a natural through-breeze that helps keep the interior cool and comfortable on hot summer days.

A small portable fan can also improve airflow dramatically.

5. Open Windows at the Right Time

Many people leave windows open all day, but this can actually make the motorhome hotter.

During the hottest part of the day, keep windows and doors closed. Then open everything up early in the morning and later in the evening when outside temperatures are lower.

6. Avoid Cooking Inside

Cooking appliances generate a surprising amount of heat.

During particularly warm weather, consider using a barbecue or preparing lighter meals that don't require extensive cooking. This will help keep the interior temperature more comfortable.

7. Use Reflective Window Screens

Reflective thermal screens can significantly reduce heat entering through the windscreen and front windows.

Our 2–4 berth Star Range pop-top campervans come with reflective thermal screens as standard, helping to reduce heat entering through the windscreen and keeping the interior cooler and more comfortable during summer adventures.

8. Start Cooling Early

It's much easier to maintain a cool temperature than to cool down an already overheated motorhome.

Start ventilating early in the morning and use any available cooling systems before temperatures reach their peak.

9. Stay Hydrated

Keeping yourself cool is just as important as keeping the motorhome cool.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day, wear lightweight clothing and seek shade whenever possible. Staying hydrated will help you enjoy your motorhome holiday even during a heatwave.

10. Travel Earlier in the Day

If you're moving between campsites, consider travelling early in the morning.

Roads are often quieter, temperatures are lower and you'll arrive with plenty of time to set up before the hottest part of the day.

Enjoy Comfortable Summer Motorhome Holidays

A little preparation goes a long way when temperatures rise. By parking in the shade, keeping blinds closed, creating good airflow and using your motorhome's air conditioning effectively, you'll stay far more comfortable throughout your trip.

At Capricorn Campers, our modern fleet of motorhomes and campervans is designed with comfort in mind. From heat-reflective blinds and thermal screens to spacious layouts and excellent ventilation, our vehicles help you stay comfortable whatever the British summer brings.
