Motorhome Skiing Tips

With many alpine campsites gearing up for their peak season now’s the time to start planning your ultimate alpine ski motorhome road trip.

I dare say some of you reading this will be thinking that to suggest taking a motorhome skiing is a little bit bonkers and yes, I guess it’s not for everyone, but you’ll be amazed at just how many Winter sport enthusiasts do pick a motorhome as their preferred means of accommodation with a key driving factor being cost. I must confess I was a little bit dubious myself when last year we took one of our Galaxy twin lounge motorhomes skiing with our then 3 year old son. However, we and had a blast and we will be hitting the slopes with our trusty Motorhome again soon.

We camped at Le Champ du Moulin in Venosc which is situated at the base of Les Deux Alpes in France. We would wake in the morning to the waft of fresh bread and croissants which are baked onsite and impossible to resist.

From the campsite you have direct access to the slopes via a 10 minute picturesque cable car ride and at the end of day you can either soak up the lively Après ski or head back to camp and the cosy restaurant/bar for a heart warming homemade meal in front of a cosy fire.   The campsite also has very clean heated shower and sauna facilities and drying rooms for skis.  However, we ended up renting ski lockers (usually offered with ski hire) in the centre of the resort so we didn’t have to lug them back and forth to the camper.

We combined our skiing adventure with a trip to Disney Land Paris and visited the Arras battlefields to visit my husband’s Great Grandfathers war grave.  Now you wouldn’t get to do that on your traditional package Ski holiday!!

Top Motorhome Skiing tips that we learnt along the way.

  • Aim to arrive at your chosen site during daylight hours to give you time to familiarise yourself with your surroundings.
  • Don’t forget your Slippers:  To avoid water puddles inside the camper remove snowy shoes at the door.
  • Hang wet ski jackets in the bathroom over the shower tray for a drip dry approach. All of our motorhomes have heated bathrooms so they will be dry and toasty warm for the next day.
  • You may prefer to eat in resort or alternatively you can nip back “home” for an affordable lunch.  I took my slow cooker and boy did it get some use.  Nothing like a heart warming casserole after a day on the slopes.
  • Another must have item is a sledge.  The ideal transport for either carrying a tired toddler or groceries.
  • Leave your heating on low whilst you’re away from the camper.  This will ensure that you don’t have any freezing pipe issues.
  • Don’t let the waste water tank get more than half full before draining off.  That way if it were to freeze you can heat some water and run through the system to melt it.  The fresh water tanks are housed inside the motorhome and so are not susceptible to freezing.
  • If the waste water drain tap freezes just boil the kettle and pour it over
  • Keep up to date with snow reports and plan any driving during daylight hours.
  • Book electric hook up if you can, so you are not solely reliant on your gas supply for your heating.

If you would like to hire a motorhome to go skiing, we would recommend hiring any of our Galaxy Motorhomes at just £75 per day up until the end of March or a Planet+ for just £68 per day purely on their ability to cope with the cold.  We also provide you with snow chains and European travel kits.  For further inspiration on where to go for the ultimate winter road trip visit The Camping and Motorhome Club who have 7 recommended Alpine sites within their network or contact us on 01692 538948 where we will be happy to help. www.capricorncampers.com
